TMT: Desire is the Biggest Motivator

I often think about motivation and its significance in my life.

After thinking about it for YEARS, I finally realized that the truest form of motivation is subconscious motivation. The type that you don’t need to think too much about because it’s hardwired in your brain that you WILL reach a specific goal because of its value to you. And so, you do everything that it takes to get where you want to be.

I do agree that you need to have motivation for things you don’t want to do, such as waking up early. However, I believe that your goals can be tweaked to match your long-term desires. After all, a goal by itself isn’t necessarily a desire.

If you want to wake up early, what is your motivation? Getting errands done? If that isn’t something you are passionate about, then you’re most likely not going to stick to your plan.

Having an emotional connection to your goals gives you the drive to achieve them. If you connect waking up early to studying for an exam, to getting good test scores, to excelling in high school, to being accepted to your dream university, then you might be more motivated. Though many people say to focus on the small steps, looking at the big picture can be very motivational as long as you’re looking it in a positive light rather than as a challenge.

Something that helps me is connecting visuals to my dreams. For example, I collect photos of my dream university, future apartment, and my desired lifestyle (easy to do on google docs and Pinterest). This makes “hard” goals feel exciting and inspires me to work toward making my life look that way. And so, once I desire that lifestyle more than I think possible, I work without dragging myself to… I work because I crave the results.

Once more, looking at the big picture and altering your short-term goals to fit a bigger picture (that ultimately leads to something you really want), can be a great source of motivation.
