TMT: Why I changed from a Bougie to Simple lifestyle and mindset

I love fashion, but I used to be someone who was validated by the clothes I wore. I think something that needs to be discussed is that fashion is pivotal, and it’s not always for the right reason.

Let’s backtrack.

I believe in feeling empowered and confident through fashion choices, not validated through logos.

Something I never realized about myself, about 2-3 years ago, was that I craved designer handbags (and 4-5 years ago) I loved luxury for its logos.

Granted I was very young at the time and was heavily influenced by fashion vloggers and celebrities. Nonetheless this is damaging to one’s sense of self. Even adults experience the need to purchase luxury for validation, and I know this because I’ve met people who do it. I can’t help but wonder how someone can live with that same feeling I used to have, where overconsumption seemed fun and seemingly gave one status. It truly distorts one’s reality.

From what I’ve seen, some people don’t love a particular piece, but they feel good wearing it because it has a logo, and this boosts their esteem (because it makes them look wealthier than others).

In the last 2 years I stepped back and realized that true joy doesn’t come from how you look. And we all say it; we all claim to believe it. But most of us don’t. Most of us derive satisfaction from fancy cars and Gucci totes. While these things are enjoyable to own and can elevate your appearance, we need to realize that they don’t make us who we are. They don’t add quality to our lives.

Observing the things I DO have, the beauty of our planet, my memories and moments of love, and even understanding that so many people don’t have access to luxury, as it is the last thing on their mind, has changed my perspective on life tremendously. Once again, in the back of our minds we know that luxury isn’t important, and that there are people suffering in this world, hence we should be grateful for what we have and not see our privilege as something to validate ourselves. But do we really understand this? A thought crosses our mind about how lucky we are to live how we do and in a split second we’re back to our ways.

In no means have I cut fashion out of my life. I still love luxury, quality wardrobe pieces. But I never let my belongings define my worth or make me feel entitled. It’s important to draw the line between confidence and self-esteem. And so, I urge you to do the same. Reflect on your mindset and how your belongings affect your self-worth.

But… then how do I live simple?

Truth is, I don’t live simple by some people’s standards. I just discarded any superficiality I previously had. I think simply. I find value in meaningful things versus materialistic things. I don’t care about how others perceive me (besides constructive criticism of course), and I try to live a balanced life. My main goal isn’t living in a mansion or being rich anymore, it’s living a fulfilling and happy life.

I hope this post inspired you to do the same.

  1. Interesting and beautifully written, I love how you had stated that not having luxury items do not negatively effect the quality of life. I missed the posts thanks for being back

    1. Awh thank you! Yes, even though it’s exciting to own expensive items, it’s important to remember that all they are are things. Things you CAN live happily without.
Also, thank you for your continuous support. πŸ™‚
